the-dos-and-donts-of-decorating-with-wall-art

We’re a little bit crazy over wall art here at Advanced Metal Works. We’ve been making high-quality metal signs that are both motivating and empowering for years. We enjoy seeing our work displayed in people’s homes and the unique ways in which people display our signage.

However, not everybody is a fan of interior design, and if you aren’t, you probably won’t be bouncing out of your chair to tell everyone how eager you are to go home and hang paintings on your walls. While some people are born with an innate talent for interior design, many others aren’t, and that’s perfectly great.

We’ll go over the dos and don’ts of hanging art on the walls in your home in this blog. If you’re one of those people who wasn’t born with the talent of interior design, you might find a few of these suggestions useful.

DON’T FORGET TO DECORATE THE MAJORITY OF YOUR WALLS

If you go inside any home with excellent interior design, you’ll notice that the majority of the walls are covered in stylish décor. Wall paintings, tapestries, framed photos, clocks, and other items are generally available. The point is that you rarely see a fully bare wall.

Adding wall art and mounted items to a room can provide energy and, when done effectively, can create a visual “route” that directs the gaze of anybody who enters. Blank walls are a pain because they may make a room feel smaller than it is, or they can make it feel bigger and empty. Neither of these results are desirable.

As a general rule, adorn the majority of your walls! If you’ve been looking for a method to liven up your home, this could be it, especially if your walls are empty.

DON’T: DECORATE EACH AND EVERY WALL

This contradicts our last point, but it is crucial. There is such a thing as too much clutter on your walls, and you should consider how negative space — that is, space that isn’t filled with any form of décor — can be beneficial at times.

With that in mind, it’s occasionally more appropriate to leave a wall naked or to use restraint while decorating walls. The key is to start small and work your way up. Place your wall art and decorations where you think they’re most needed, then work your way up from there. If you’ve produced a satisfying, fulfilling environment without completely filling all of your walls, you should definitely trust your instincts and don’t fill in the blanks until you’re positive it’s missing something.

DO: INCLUDE A RANGE OF OPTIONS.

We’d be lying if we said we wouldn’t be pleased if you just up and ordered a cart full of our metal signs as a producer and seller of metal wall art pieces. However, we’d like to point out that, as nice as our signs are, plastering them all over your walls might not be the finest visual effect. We’d advise spacing them out organically and artfully to prevent employing the same sort of art in several places in the same room.

If you want to design a room skillfully, employing the same type of décor over and over can detract from the overall effect. In this case, the adage “less is more” holds true. One well-placed piece of art may define an entire room and naturally draw people’s attention to it. When you put another one next to it, and another one after that, the original piece’s individuality begins to fade into the background noise, and your area becomes congested and chaotic.

The design of our metal signs, in particular, is particularly bold. We recommend that you find proper mounting spots for them so that they can define the space they’re in. If you have many signs, though, consider spacing them out into different rooms so that each one has its own distinct authority wherever it’s mounted and isn’t drowned out.

DO NOT: INSPIRE CONFUSION.

In contrast to what we just discussed, variety is good, but you should make sure your home has a consistent style or motif. To put it another way, too much diversity can be overwhelming and off-putting.

Take, for example, our metal wall decor. The majority of our wall art is text art, inspired by scriptures and motivational phrases. While it’s understandable why this wouldn’t be the only design language used in a home, it’d also be strange to have a bunch of other decorations that don’t go together.

If you hang one of our biblical quotes next to a death metal poster, a framed unicorn picture next to that, and then a vintage Bavarian cuckoo clock to top it off, it’ll just look weird because none of the pieces work together.

Then you have to consider, “What is the intention?” Which work of art is the most accurate representation of the host’s tastes? Keep it simple – you want visual variety, but your decorations should complement each other.

DO: DETERMINE THE SCALE

This is a broad one that might be divided down into several sections, but the gist is that for each wall, there is a specific “area” where wall art should ostensibly belong. The furniture that is placed around it can cause this area to vary. If you put a sofa in front of a wall, for example, most wall art will appear best centred over the couch, roughly equidistant from the furniture and the ceiling. If you hang it too high, it will create a visual imbalance, making the couch appear oddly little, and if you hang it too low, it will make the space feel as if it is closing in on you.

It’s also vital to consider size: if you hang a piece of wall art that’s too little, you’ll notice it right away, and the same is usually true of pieces that are too huge. Wall art should not be insufficiently adorning a room and should not leave the wall bare. If your wall art is too little, consider combining it with other pieces to form a unified collage or composition.

DO NOT: HANG OR MOUNT EVERYTHING.

Finally, one fun method to play around with your walls is to avoid hanging or mounting all of your decorations. Some items, such as a huge mirror, look nice leaning against the wall and lying on the floor, while others, like one of our smaller wall art pieces, look good resting on a shelf or drawer unit.

We can’t give any specific instructions here except to experiment. Even if you’re not a professional interior designer, you almost certainly have some kind of intuition that allows you to recognise when something isn’t quite right. Try leaning some of your artwork against the wall! If something doesn’t feel right, go with your gut. Great if it feels right!
